Castles

Ruine Farnsburg

The imposing remains of the Farnsburg ruin, an extended castle complex, comprise a shield wall, towers, myriad buildings and a ring wall. Farnsburg is situated between Ormalingen, Buus and Hemmiken, and is an ideal place to visit if you enjoy nature, walking and pursuing activities as a family.

Ruine Pfeffingen

The castle ruin at Pfeffingen was once the seat of the Counts of Thierstein-Pfeffingen and is still visible today above the Birseck.

Schloss Wildenstein

Wildenstein Castle and the neighbouring nature reserve—measuring 112 hectares—are home to famous, centuries-old oak trees, a testament to a cultivated landscape from the Middle Ages, part of which can still be seen today.

Ruine Landskron

The still well-preserved ruins of Landskron Castle transport you back to the past and are an impressive reminder of medieval times. As well as the wonderful castle complex itself—which lies in French territory in the commune of Leymen—it is worth visiting for the amazing views.

Schloss Bottmingen

The impressive moated castle of Bottmingen is one of the most photographed subjects in the Basel region: a true fairytale castle!

Ruine Birseck

Birseck Castle rises high above Arlesheim. The prominent castle, visible for miles, appears to watch over the Ermitage.

Ruine Wartenberg

It is particularly worth visiting the Wartenberg, where the ruins of three castles from the Middle Ages await you. The towers of the the middle and front castles are now viewing towers, offering a fantastic panorama of the surrounding area.

Ruine Schloss Waldenburg

High above the medieval town of Waldenburg sits the ruin of the same name. Here, you can explore the significant remains of what was once a bailiwick castle.

Schloss Binningen

The wonderful Binningen Castle is home to an exquisite restaurant and hotel.

Ruine Homburg

The impressive ruined castle of Homburg, situated between Läufelfingen and Buckten, is open to visitors and comprises several building elements. The large defence tower is three storeys high and gives an idea of the once imposing site.
