Ermitage

The Ermitage is the largest and prettiest English landscaped garden in Switzerland. Romantic ponds, winding paths and natural idylls captivate walkers, transporting them to a mysterious and secretive world.

The Ermitage is on the walk to the Birseck ruin, in a romantic landscaped English garden designed to showcase the best of what nature has to offer. The Ermitage offers a romantic natural experience: it is a place of stillness, peace and reflection and, for some, even of strength. The park, with its artfully arranged ponds and streams, mills, gardening lodge and hermitage is also a playground for children, mainly because of the cliff caves on the way up the mountain. Various walks and hikes in and around Gempen, Schönmatt and the Dorneck ruin all end up at the Ermitage as a nice romantic conclusion. The landscaped gardens of the Ermitage are accessible all year round. The Birseck ruin and the hermit’s cells are only open between May and September. The Arlesheim driving club offers informative and interesting tours of the Ermitage.
It's best to visit the Ermitage on foot, leaving from Arlesheim train station, where tram and bus connections, as well as parking, are also available. The Ermitage is about a 5-minute walk from the Arlesheim Dorf tram stop.
