Altstadt Liestal

The county town of the canton of Baselland has a lot of surprises in store. In the ‘old town’ of Liestal, you’ll come across neat little houses, pretty cobbled old-town streets, and a poetry and municipal museum.

The ‘Stedtli’ (‘old town’), as Liestal’s historic centre is popularly known, is structured like a typical medieval town. One main street and two side streets, whose outer buildings also form part of the city wall, have been largely preserved to this day. The gate is an entrance to the pedestrianised zone, which is home to a variety of retail outlets. On Rathausstrasse, the main street, which was renovated in 2017, you will find the poetry and municipal museum (Dichter- und Stadtmuseum). Its three levels are dedicated to the works of poets and artists from the region, including the Georg and Emma Herwegh collection, as well as the history and traditions of Liestal. There is also a tourist information office in the building. An annual highlight is the ‘Chienbäse-Umzug’, which transforms the ‘Stedtli’ into a blazing inferno for carnival, which marks the beginning of Lent.
